I’ve always been interested in how things work.
My career has taken me through engineering and product development, operations, nonprofit leadership, finance and business advisory.
It may not look like a straight line.
But the work I’ve loved most has always had something in common:
I’ve always been drawn to complicated problems.
As an engineer in product development, I learned to understand systems, solve problems and build useful things.
In operations and nonprofit leadership, the systems got more complicated—because they involved organizations and people.
And in finance, I learned to use the numbers as another way of understanding what’s really happening inside a business.
The common thread is curiosity.
I’m the person who asks another question.
Who notices when something doesn’t quite add up.
Who wants to understand why something works the way it does—and whether there’s a better way to do it.
Over the years, that curiosity has led me to diagnose problems, build tools, and help leaders see their situations differently.
That’s what Green Hawk is about now.
Focused work on interesting problems, useful tools built from what I learn, and Field Notes about the things I notice along the way.
A little more about me.
I’m a mechanical engineer with an MBA — and a theology degree. I have more than three decades of experience across technical, operational, leadership and financial roles.
I especially enjoy working with people who are curious, thoughtful and trying to leave things a little better than they found them.
A few things you won’t find on my résumé:
- I’ve studied Ancient Greek, Hebrew — and now Gaelic.
- I split my time between Texas and a cabin on a lake in Minnesota.
- I’m learning watercolor painting, dabble in ceramics—and I’m trying to get better at chess.
- I have a habit of turning everyday problems into spreadsheets, calculators and other tools.
Curiosity isn’t something I turn off when I’m done working.
I believe business can be a force for good.
I especially value working with organizations creating positive impact for people and the planet. I try to make responsible choices in my own business, too — including hosting this site with GreenGeeks, a web host committed to renewable energy.
